Review
As a lover of the art of cinema, I had the pleasure of watching ’21 Bridges,’ a thriller directed by Brian Kirk. The story begins with the murder of eight NYPD cops by two robbers who manage to escape with fifty kilos of cocaine. Our lead character, Andre Davis (Chadwick Boseman), is a detective assigned to find the killers and bring them to justice.
Davis is introduced as a tough cop with an uncompromising attitude towards criminals. His no-nonsense approach is evident from his first interaction with his colleagues, where he puts them in their place, saying, “I’m not playing politics. I’m playing to win.” Throughout the movie, he’s depicted as an intelligent detective who knows how to get things done.
The plot thickens when Davis orders for all twenty-one bridges leading out of Manhattan Island to be closed down, making it impossible for the perpetrators to leave. This decision sets off a chain reaction that puts everyone involved in danger.
As we follow Davis’s investigation, we get insights into his personal life and past experiences. We learn that he lost his father (a cop) when he was young and grew up with a strong desire for justice. This backstory helps us understand why he’s so invested in solving this case.
One quote that stuck out to me was when Davis says, “The only thing more dangerous than a cop killer is if those killers are cops.” This line reflects the movie’s underlying theme that even those who are tasked with enforcing the law can become corrupt and misuse their power.
The supporting cast in this movie is also noteworthy. Sienna Miller plays Frankie Burns, another detective who teams up with Davis on this case. Stephan James and Taylor Kitsch play Michael Trujillo and Ray Jackson respectively – the two robbers on the run.
The historical backdrop of ’21 Bridges’ adds depth to its storyline. The movie takes place over one night but touches on a range of issues, including police brutality, drug trafficking, and corruption. It’s a reminder that these problems have been prevalent in society for decades and that we still have a long way to go to eradicate them.
The movie’s score and popularity reflect its quality. Henry Jackman’s music is a perfect complement to the film’s intensity, adding gravitas to each scene. ’21 Bridges’ has amassed an impressive audience rating of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed over $50 million worldwide.
Filming this movie was no easy feat. The vast majority of it was shot on location in various parts of New York City. The filmmakers had to work around the city’s strict regulations regarding the closing of roads and bridges, adding an extra layer of complexity to the production.
Evaluating this movie from a critical standpoint, I think it’s one of the best thrillers I’ve seen recently. It keeps you on edge for its entire runtime, with every twist and turn leading up to a satisfying conclusion. Boseman delivers an excellent performance as Andre Davis, bringing depth and nuance to his character.
’21 Bridges’ received positive reviews from critics but didn’t receive any major awards or nominations. Despite this oversight, I believe it deserves recognition for its cinematography, which captures the grittiness of New York City at night expertly.
On a personal level, what stood out for me were some of the standout scenes in the movie. One notable moment was when Davis confronts Trujillo towards the end – their dialogue is intense and meaningful. Another key scene involves a shootout between law enforcement officers and Trujillo; it’s chaotic yet gripping.
Finally, while there wasn’t much gossip surrounding ’21 Bridges’ during its production or release period, it did spawn one hit single – ‘Catch the Sun’ by Lil Baby – which played during the credits.
In conclusion, if you’re a fan of gritty, action-packed thrillers, ’21 Bridges’ won’t disappoint. Its storyline and characters are both well-crafted, and the acting is superb. The movie’s historical backdrop and powerful themes make it an important addition to the genre, earning my stamp of approval as a movie lover and Maya Angelou enthusiast.
