Review

I recently had the pleasure of viewing the film Eadweard, a cinematic masterpiece that left me spellbound and wanting for more. It’s a film that tells the story of Eadweard Muybridge, one of history’s most innovative photographers and filmmakers. The movie explores his life, his work, and the controversies surrounding him.

The storyline is woven around Eadweard Muybridge, a pioneering photographer who changed our understanding of movement. He was commissioned by Leland Stanford to capture a horse’s gallop in motion to help settle an age-old debate about whether or not all four hooves leave the ground while in stride. His photographs were revolutionary and soon landed him in the public eye.

Eadweard was directed by Kyle Rideout and produced by Josh Epstein. Harris Goldberg wrote the screenplay for this visually stunning biopic about one of history’s unsung heroes.

The plot of the movie revolves around Muybridge’s quest for perfection in capturing still photographs in motion. He is obsessed with capturing life as it happens which leads him into trouble when he accidentally kills his wife’s lover. The scenes depicting this aspect are extremely dramatic and emotion-packed.

The cast members were all magnificent in their roles, but none stood out more than Michael Eklund who played Eadweard Muybridge with such conviction that it seemed like he was truly walking in Muybridge’s shoes throughout this tumultuous journey.

One of my favorite quotes from the movie is “We see life as it really is through art.” This statement resonates with me, and I believe it perfectly captures what Muybridge must have been thinking when he set out to capture movement on film for the first time ever.

One thing that struck me about this film was its historical accuracy. The team behind it did their research exceptionally well, taking care to avoid any deviations from known facts about Muybridge’s character or events that occurred within his life.

The score and the popularity of the movie are also noteworthy. Jeff Toyne’s music was hauntingly beautiful and expertly complemented the scenes in which they were played. The movie premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2015 to rave reviews and has since gathered a growing fanbase.

The cinematography was absolutely stunning, particularly during scenes set on Muybridge’s ranch. You could feel the heat emanating from the sun, hear the rustling of leaves as they blew across dry ground, and smell the dust kicking up from horse hooves galloping through fields.

In terms of awards, Eadweard won Best Picture at the 2015 Leo Awards, Best Art Direction at the Canadian Screen Awards, and was nominated for a total of six awards across various events that year.

The film was shot on location in Canada, specifically in Victoria and Langley, British Columbia. The crew worked extensively with local authorities to create an authentic period setting for this biopic.

Overall, my analysis of Eadweard is that it’s a deeply moving tribute to one man’s obsession with capturing motion on film. The character development is outstanding; you truly feel like you are watching history unfold before your eyes. If you’re looking for an engaging cinematic experience that’ll transport you back in time, then this movie is a must-see!
