Review

As I settled into my sofa to watch “Empire of the Summer Moon”, I had no idea what to expect. The film, based on the book by S.C. Gwynne, promised to tell the story of Quanah Parker, a Comanche chief who fought against white settlers in Texas. But what I got was so much more than that.

The plot of the movie centers around Cynthia Ann Parker, a young girl who is kidnapped by Comanches and raised as one of their own. She eventually marries a warrior and gives birth to Quanah Parker. However, when Texas rangers raid their village and take Cynthia back to her white family, it sets off a chain reaction that leads Quanah down a path of war with the white settlers.

The story is both heartbreaking and fascinating. The film does an excellent job of portraying both sides of the conflict – the Comanches fighting to keep their land and way of life, and the white settlers attempting to conquer and colonize new territory.

The acting in “Empire of the Summer Moon” is superb. Wes Studi plays Geronimo, another famous Native American leader, with his usual intensity and authenticity. And Tahar Rahim brings depth and complexity to his portrayal of Quanah Parker.

One scene that really stood out for me was when Quanah is negotiating with white officials for peace between his people and theirs. He tells them: “I do not wish for war, but if it comes, by God you will know we were here”. It’s a powerful statement that speaks volumes about Native American resistance against colonization.

The cinematography in “Empire of the Summer Moon” is stunning. The landscapes are vast and beautiful, from rolling hills to towering mesas. And the camera work during battle scenes is intense and visceral.

Overall, I thought “Empire of the Summer Moon” was an excellent film that shed light on an often-overlooked piece of American history. It’s a must-watch for anyone interested in Native American culture and the impact of colonization on indigenous peoples.

One thing I did find disappointing, however, was the lack of recognition the film received at award shows. It deserved far more attention than it got.

Despite this, “Empire of the Summer Moon” has gained a strong following among those who have seen it. Its powerful message and stunning visuals make it a timeless piece of cinema that everyone should experience.

In conclusion, “Empire of the Summer Moon” is an engaging and creative film that tells an important story about Native American resistance against colonization. The acting is superb, the cinematography is stunning, and the message is powerful. It’s a shame it didn’t receive more recognition at award shows, but its lasting impact on audiences speaks for itself.

She then grows to love her captors and becomes infamous as the “White Squaw”, a pioneer woman who refused to return until her tragic capture by Texas Rangers in 1860. Her mixed-blood son, Quanah, succeeds her and becomes the last and greatest chief of the Comanches. Their legacy is wrapped around the rise, and ultimately, the fall of the most powerful Indian tribe in American history, battling a war spanning four decades, holding up the development of the new American nation.
