“Freelancers 2012” is a gritty cop movie that follows the story of Malo, a rogue cop who joins a band of corrupt officers led by his late father’s partner. The film is filled with flashy gun fights, intense interrogations, and complicated relationships between characters. Review
It was a sweltering hot day in the small town of Macondo when I first heard about the legendary movie “Freelancers”. I was strolling down the streets, minding my own business when I overheard a group of enthusiastic cinephiles passionately discussing the merits of this movie. After listening intently to their animated conversation, it was clear that this movie had piqued their curiosity and left them in awe. As a curious writer without much to do on that warm afternoon, it seemed natural to investigate further.
“Freelancers”, directed by Jessy Terrero, is a crime thriller film released in 2012. The story follows the life of Malo (Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson), who becomes a New York City police officer after his father’s murder. He is then assigned to an elite squad consisting of officers Sarcone (Robert De Niro) and LaRue (Forest Whitaker), both of whom have dark secrets they wish to keep hidden from Malo.
When Malo begins investigating the murder of his father, he uncovers a web of corruption within the police department and realizes that his partners in crime are not what they seem. The plot spirals into one twisted encounter after another as Malo finds himself entangled with drug lords, kidnappers and murderers all while trying to maintain his integrity as a cop.
The casting for this film is spot on with Curtis Jackson giving an admirable performance as Malo. While Robert De Niro proves why he remains one of Hollywood’s finest actors with his portrayal of Sarcone – an aging cop who has been at this game for too long. Forest Whitaker also gives an outstanding performance as LaRue – A crooked cop who has used his badge for personal gain for far too long.
The addition of Dana Delany, Anabelle Acosta and Beau Garrett provided the perfect balance with their strong screen presence and talented acting abilities. Together, they added the perfect amount of spice to this already well-crafted story.
The score and soundtrack, which were composed by Brian Tyler, provided the perfect background music to this hard-boiled crime thriller. The score was intense and suspenseful at all the right moments, providing an emotional roller coaster ride for viewers.
The movie was set in New York City with gritty backdrops that gave it an authentic feel. The film’s cinematography, under the watchful eye of Director of Photography Yaron Levy, is outstanding. The camera movements and shots were always crisp and engaging – bringing the audience closer to the action.
The popularity of “Freelancers” skyrocketed on its initial release as audiences couldn’t get enough of this high-stakes crime thriller. It’s no surprise that soon after its release, “Freelancers” became one of the most discussed movies among film critics.
Despite being released eight years ago, the movie still grips audiences today. It’s a testament to both the casting choices and the storyline that manages to stand the test of time. In addition to its captivating performance by Robert De Niro and Forest Whitaker, it also boasts excellent writing that leaves audiences on edge until its climax.
Critics can tend to be harsh when picking apart films; however “Freelancers” seems immune from such criticism. Rotten Tomatoes reviewers gave it a solid 20 percent rating while IMDB users rated it a 6 out of 10 – making it one of those rare films that can transcend genres and tastes – appealing to all types of film enthusiasts.
Despite some criticisms regarding pacing issues in certain areas, its sound editing falls into place perfectly with every scene complimenting all aspects of this well-crafted production.
It’s not surprising that this movie has amassed quite a following since its release; I wouldn’t be surprised if we see a remake or sequel in the coming years. If you haven’t seen Freelancers, then clear out your schedule immediately and settle in for an immersive thrill ride from start to finish.
Just be warned – once you start this movie – you won’t be able to stop until its explosive conclusion.
