As the sun sets behind the horizon, soldiers are hunkering down for the night in the small town of Remagen, Germany. They are American soldiers fighting in World War II, and their mission is to cross the Rhine River and capture one of its bridges before the German army can destroy it.
This is the premise of “The Bridge at Remagen,” a classic war film directed by John Guillermin in 1969. Based on actual events that took place in March 1945, the movie tells the story of a group of American soldiers who find themselves trapped on one side of the Rhine while trying to capture a bridge that will serve as a pathway for American troops into Germany.
