Alive – The Movie that Will Make You Appreciate Life
There are movies that will make you cry, laugh out loud, or keep you on the edge of your seat. And then there’s Alive, a movie that will do all of those things, and more. Directed by Frank Marshall and based on a true story, Alive tells the harrowing tale of a group of Uruguayan rugby players who survive a plane crash in the Andes Mountains. It’s a story about survival, hope, and the strength of the human spirit.
The movie opens with a shot of the rugby team boarding the plane for their trip to Chile. This is no luxury airliner – it’s an old military transport plane that’s been converted for civilian use. The passengers are cramped and uncomfortable, but they’re excited about their adventure. They’re young men who are full of life and hope for their future.
As they fly over the Andes, disaster strikes. The plane crashes into a mountain peak and breaks apart. Many passengers die instantly, but some survive – including the rugby team. At first, they think they’ll be rescued soon – after all, planes don’t just disappear, right? But as days turn into weeks and rescue doesn’t come, they realize that they’re on their own.
What follows is an incredible tale of survival against all odds. With no food or supplies to speak of, the survivors must rely on their wits to stay alive. They eat whatever they can find – from leather boots to frozen human flesh. They build makeshift shelters out of debris from the plane wreckage and cling to each other for support.
One of the most compelling aspects of Alive is its portrayal of how these young men react under such extreme circumstances. Some become leaders and provide comfort to their fellow survivors; others crack under pressure and give up hope altogether. It’s fascinating to watch how people can either rise or fall in times of crisis.
The acting in Alive is superb. The cast includes Ethan Hawke, Josh Hamilton, and Vincent Spano, among others. Each actor brings a depth of emotion to their role that really makes you care about these characters’ fate. Hawke, in particular, shines as Nando Parrado, one of the team members who takes charge and makes a desperate attempt to reach civilization on foot.
The cinematography in Alive is also breathtaking. The film was shot on location in the Andes Mountains, which gives it an authenticity that couldn’t be replicated on a soundstage. The snowy peaks and harsh terrain are both beautiful and terrifying.
Of course, no movie is without its flaws. Some critics have argued that Alive relies too heavily on shock value – namely, the scenes in which the survivors eat human flesh. But I would argue that these scenes are necessary to underscore just how dire the situation was for these young men. It’s a testament to their will to survive that they were willing to do whatever it took to stay alive.
One of my favorite quotes from the movie comes from Nando Parrado: “We were dying but we didn’t want to die.” It’s a simple statement, but it really captures the essence of what this movie is all about – the will to live even when all hope seems lost.
Despite being released over 25 years ago, Alive still resonates with audiences today. It’s a timeless story of survival that reminds us how precious life truly is. So if you’re looking for a movie that will make you appreciate what you have, look no further than Alive.
