“No Man’s Land”: A Satirical Look at War
War is hell, but sometimes it can be funny. At least that’s what the 2001 film “No Man’s Land” suggests. The movie, directed by Bosnian filmmaker Danis Tanović, tells the story of a group of soldiers from opposing sides of the Bosnian War who find themselves trapped together in a trench. What follows is a series of comedic misunderstandings and absurd situations as they try to navigate their way out of the no man’s land between enemy lines.
The film opens with the camera panning over a desolate landscape and settling on a group of Bosnian soldiers digging trenches. Among them is Ciki (played by Branko Đurić), whose father was killed by Serbian soldiers earlier in the war. In retaliation, Ciki and his comrades set out to ambush a group of Serbs who are advancing on their position.
But things go awry when one of Ciki’s men steps on a landmine and becomes stuck in the trench. As Ciki tries to free him, he discovers that there is a Serb soldier named Nino (played by Rene Bitorajac) trapped just feet away from him. After some initial hostility, the two men strike up an unlikely friendship as they wait for help to arrive.

Ciki and Nino are able to see each other as individuals rather than faceless enemies, but their fellow soldiers have a harder time making that leap.
The film also highlights the absurdity of war in general. At one point, a group of journalists show up at the trench, hoping to get a scoop on the standoff. They immediately start bickering with each other about who has the better angle for their photos. It’s a reminder that, while soldiers are risking their lives on the front lines, others are profiting from their suffering.
The acting in “No Man’s Land” is top-notch. Đurić and Bitorajac have great chemistry as Ciki and Nino, managing to make their friendship feel both genuine and unlikely. Siatidis provides some much-needed comic relief as Sgt. Marchand, whose attempts to mediate the situation often result in him getting hit with rocks.
One standout scene in the film involves Ciki and Nino trying to communicate with each other despite not speaking each other’s language. They resort to using hand gestures and crude drawings in the dirt, which is both hilarious and touching at the same time.
