Review
The sun beat down on the barren landscape of the high school, and the students, bored and restless, awaited the upcoming school dance. The excitement was palpable, and yet there was a sense of trepidation. For they knew not what lay ahead.
Enter School Dance, a comedy-drama film by Nick Cannon that follows Jason Jackson, played by Bobb’e J. Thompson, a freshman at Bayside High School who dreams of becoming a rapper. He decides to join the dance committee to impress his crush Anastacia, played by Kristinia DeBarge.
The film opens with Jason Jackson in his bedroom rapping along to his favorite songs when his mother interrupts him with news that he’s getting ready to start high school. Jason is indifferent about this new chapter in his life until he sees Anastacia walking around campus and sets his sights on joining the dance committee.
But it’s not all smooth sailing for Jason as he has to navigate bullies and mean girls who threaten to ruin everything he’s worked hard for. It doesn’t help that his two best friends are no help and provide more comic relief than actual assistance.
The movie features a star-studded cast including Kevin Hart as coach Crawford, Amber Rose as MaryWanna, Mike Epps as Principal Rogers and Katt Williams as J-Dog.
With its quirky characters and over-the-top humor, School Dance quickly became a cult classic among teenagers everywhere. The film also received praise for its depiction of issues such as bullying in schools and teenage pressure.
One standout scene involves Hart’s character coaching the boys’ basketball team in an attempt to impress MaryWanna. The scene is full of crude humor and antics that leave viewers laughing out loud.
Another memorable moment occurs when Jason performs a rap song at the dance competition that leaves everyone stunned. It’s moments like these that make School Dance shine among other teen comedies.
However, not everyone was impressed with the film. Critics panned it for its reliance on crude humor and predictable plot. Some also felt that certain scenes dragged on for too long, making the film feel tedious in parts.
But despite the criticism, School Dance was a hit among audiences and earned a respectable $7 million at the box office. The film also spawned various merchandise including t-shirts and posters.
School Dance may not go down in history as one of the greatest films of all time, but it certainly provided audiences with a fun-filled ride that they won’t soon forget. Its mix of outrageous humor and heartwarming moments make it a must-see movie for anyone looking to escape reality for a while.
As Hemingway once said, “I like to write when I feel spiteful; it’s like having a good sneeze.” And School Dance delivers that sneeze in spades. So if you’re looking for a good laugh and something to dance to, School Dance is the movie for you.
