In this epic Marvel flick, we find our hero Thor (played by the dashing Chris Hemsworth) fighting to save Asgard and Earth from a new enemy known as Malekith. The Dark Elves are after an ancient power source called the Aether that has been hidden away for centuries. With Jane Foster (Natalie Portman) unwittingly becoming the host of the Aether, she becomes a target for Malekith’s wrath.
Director Alan Taylor took over for Kenneth Branagh in this sequel and brought his own style to the film. The storyline is rich with Norse mythology and sci-fi elements such as wormholes and other dimensions. It’s a feast for the eyes as well with stunning visuals of Asgard and various worlds that Thor travels to.
The plot thickens as we see Loki (Tom Hiddleston) reappear on-screen after his presumed death in The Avengers. His banter with Thor is some of the most entertaining dialogue in the film, and his motives are always in question.
The supporting cast is fantastic as well with Anthony Hopkins returning as Odin, Rene Russo as Frigga, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Kat Dennings as Darcy Lewis, and Stellan Skarsgård as Dr. Erik Selvig.
One particular scene that stands out is when Thor must escape from Asgard’s prison to retrieve Loki’s help. He battles his way through various guards while still being chained up – it’s an intense moment that showcases Hemsworth’s physicality.
Composer Brian Tyler provides an excellent score that blends orchestral soundscapes with more modern sounds. It’s a fitting accompaniment to the action-packed scenes throughout the movie.
