Review
As the sun begins to set over the Appalachian Mountains, the snow has blanketed the forest floor. It’s a harsh winter, and it’s only going to get worse. The film “Cold Mountain” takes us on a journey through this treacherous terrain as two lovers are separated by war and forced to fend for themselves in a world of danger and uncertainty.
The movie was released in 2003 and directed by Anthony Minghella, based on the novel by Charles Frazier. Jude Law stars as Inman, a Confederate soldier who is injured in battle and decides to desert and make his way back home to Cold Mountain, where he hopes to reunite with his love, Ada Monroe, played by Nicole Kidman.
The story begins with Ada living a privileged life on her father’s farm in North Carolina. She is a woman of great intelligence and refinement but has little experience with life’s hardships. Her father dies suddenly, leaving her alone in a world that is rapidly changing due to the Civil War. Inman is sent off to fight for the Confederacy and they share only one night together before being separated by war.
As Inman struggles through the wilderness back to his beloved Ada, he meets various characters along the way who help or hinder his progress. One of these characters is Ruby Thewes (Renée Zellweger), an independent young woman who teaches Ada how to survive without servants or slaves.

The cinematography is breathtaking as we see vast landscapes covered with snow or greenery depending on where we are in our protagonists’ journey. The film was shot mostly on location in Romania; however various locations in North Carolina were also used for the filming.
The film score was composed by Gabriel Yared who won an Academy Award for his work on the film. The music conveys a sense of melancholy, sadness, and yearning for something that may be impossible to obtain.
The film was a commercial success and received critical acclaim from various critics. It was nominated for numerous awards including seven Academy Awards, winning one for Best Supporting Actress (Renée Zellweger). The film’s success lies in its ability to capture the human spirit in times of adversity.
Critics argued that Anthony Minghella’s direction doesn’t provide enough depth or complexity in certain scenes and characters.
